Fanvan Makes the News - Full Story
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Fans who make the trek and spend the dough can see every game at Arrowhead, but, will you be able to see the games from your living room?
Last season Arrowhead resembled the early 1980's. The Chiefs who once boasted of a season ticket waiting list shed 20,000 season ticket holders, dipping below 50,000 from a peak of 72,000 in the 90's.
But below the fading barbeque haze you'll still find a group of guys. Eight buddies in all whose Sunday best includes red and gold.
"We started putting it together and thought, 'What a good place to start Fan Van', just we dubbed it," said Mark Dipoto.
They've held season tickets for three years, wearing number 85, the year of their van. Recently they've enjoyed more room to roll out their "tailgater-ater", a mobile drink cart.
Arrowhead is bleeding fans.
"The Chiefs are not putting a competitive of a product on the field. With the economy, people don't have disposable income to go just because tailgating is fun," said Dipoto.
The NFL warns that a dozen teams may not sell out all of their home games this year, compared to only three teams who failed to sell out last year.
Now, socked with a recession, more fans may stay home.
The Chiefs are confident they will sell out the first half of the season with big draws in the Cowboys and Giants.
The last preseason game Thursday in not blacked out.
